15th Jul 2020

We may not think about this very often, but the places we sit and occupy frequently carry a lot of germs, particles, dust and odours. To help ensure we don’t fall prey to sickness and itch, we need to ensure these places are kept clean regularly. Yet, many of us are unsure how exactly to clean our fabrics, sofas and upholstery.

Fret not because we are here to help. We’ve broken down the steps for your easy reference, with a guide on using the right products for the right symptom.

Key Notes Before Cleaning:

  • Check the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions of your sofa, mattress and other upholstery before attempting to remove stains on your own. Some materials have specific care instructions that you need to follow, otherwise could lead to damage and void warranties.

Here are some universal codes:

Cleaning Code What it Means
W "Water-based cleaner" Only use a water-based cleanser to clean the upholstery
S/W "Solvents and water-based cleaners" Safe to use both solvents and water-based cleansers
S "Solvent-based cleaner" Only use a solvent to clean the upholstery
X Professional cleaning is needed. Do not attempt to clean by yourself

If you are unsure of what your upholstery can or cannot take, test a small area, not visible to public, for any discoloration before proceeding.

Sometimes, the unfortunate happens. Your mattress or upholstery may encounter some stains. With stains, do only SPOT CLEANING, which means to treat it gently, by dabbing the stain. Do not rub, otherwise the stain can get deeper into the threads of the fabric.

And as always, before you attempt to clean stains yourself, do remember to check the cleaning label of your furniture of what can and can’t be done.

Mattress Stains: Apply a small amount of Sugar Bubble ; Citric Acid to the stain. Then blot out stain with a clean cloth. Do not saturate the mattress with agent.

Food Stains: Water and soap is usually sufficient for most food stains. Use a clean cloth or sponge to dab at the stain.

Greasy Stains: Sugar Bubble ; Baking Soda mixed with water to make a paste. Let it sit for 10 minutes before blotting it with a moistened paper towel. If stubborn stain persists, use a bit of dish soap and scrub at it with a soft tooth brush.

Wine and Berry stains: Try lifting the stain with sparkling water and blotting with a clean cloth.

Beer and Coffee stains: Gently rub the stain with an ice cube, then mix a small amount of liquid detergent with warm water. Use this to blot the stain out.

Ink stains: Pour a bit of rubbing alcohol on the stain, then blot at the stain starting from the edges and moving to the epicenter. Do not rub at the stain.

Pee stains: Pour half-water, half- Sugar Bubble ; Citric Acid solution on the stain and blot with a clean cloth. Once you have removed the moisture out, you can sprinkle Sugar Bubble ; Baking Soda to help deodorize the sofa. Vacuum the sofa after letting the baking soda sit for at least 30 minutes till dry.
